Title: Paying for Value: Lessons From the Medicare Hospice Benefit.

Summary: The authors discuss three lessons from the MHB that should be considered when developing an alternative payment model with value-based incentives for end-of-life care. First, the APM should include actionable accountability measures that are tested. Second, care must be exercised when defining “value”, especially to avoid unintended consequences. Lastly, consideration must be given to defining the denominator (i.e., the total population being studied) regarding access to care, cost neutrality, and easily identifying appropriate patients.
